Indeed, the eponymous novella seems purposely confrontational. Humorous in its serious understanding of futility and hope and death and longing. It was much worse in some ways to come out as a soccer player in the gay community than it was to come out as gay in the straight community.
Often Alameddine treats situations of death with humor. I found myself having to put the book down at times, because I needed time to process what it was I had just read. Koolaids breaks from the traditional novel style in that the whole book is a non-linear narrative.
